Brazilian Keratin Treatment

Hey Naturalistas!

I wanted to share some more information about straightening treatments that are not permanent but will help you get your hair straighter easier with a bit of curl loosening and defining during the period the treatments lasts.

It's official name would be Brazilian Keratin Treatment (BKT), which is a curl relaxer. Some also call it Brazilian Hair Straightening or Brazilian Blowout. It first came to the United States a few years ago. It has slowly gained more popularity since then with hairstylists in the US.

Some of you have heard of Japanese hair straightening which was hot a few years ago, it is called Thermal Reconditioning. This is a natural cornstarch-based hair relaxing system which makes use of a more gentle form of ammonium thyoglycolate, which is free of the traditional relaxing waxes or lyes along with special straightening irons. However, ammonium thyoglycolate and sodium hydroxide (standard relaxers) are still harsh chemicals. Most relaxers and straighteners have those chemicals in them.

The key part of BKT is that it is not a strong chemical process. It utilizes Keratin, which is the same protein our hair is made from, of course it is a different keratin, but nonetheless it is a similar protein. I would equate it to the difference between the hormones women naturally produce and the hormones taken orally for birth control. It changes how our body operates bit, but it is hormones we generally already produce.

PROS: Aside from the gentleness of the active ingredient, Keratin, there are other pros to this treatment. Another key part of this treatment is that it does not permanently straighten your hair as relaxers do. It also works better and longer on color treated hair or chemically processed. Another plus is that there is no demarcation line between the treated hair and the new growth. Additionally, the process is also a treatment that helps your hair because the keratin fits around the cortex of your hair and strengthens it, just as any keratin treatment does. The only difference is that this one is sealed into your hair.

CONS: As my brother would say, "if its too good to be true, its not true," so here are the bad sides to this treatment. The formula contains formaldehyde which is a known carcinogen that will irritate the eyes and lungs.Make sure your stylist is highly practiced and trained in this process, you will need a room with good ventilation and protect your face and eyes when they start to blow out your hair to keep from getting any on your face and in your eyes. There are some cases where people break out into rashes or hives the next day from exposure to the chemicals in rooms without proper ventilation. It has been noted that the process contains levels of formaldehyde that is against OSHA regulations. OSHA designates that .2ppm of formaldehyde is acceptable, while brazilian treatments have 3ppm and up. The FDA will be investigating this in the coming months [Source: ALLURE October]

Prices: Prices for this treatment start around maybe $180 but can range up to $300 and $400, especially for the more curly haired, coarse haired women. You know they always jack up the price when we walk in the salon...smh.

Time: the process lasts for about 2 hours and it keeps your hair noticeablly more manageable and easier to straighten for about 6 weeks to a few months (maybe 3 or 4). It also lasts longer on chemically processed hair or color treated hair. The life of the treatment also depends on how often the hair is washed.

*NOTE:
There are formaldehyde free versions of the BKT!!!

Here is some information on someone who has done a blowout and she even has some video footage of it being put in and such:

NaturallyCurly's Brazilian Blowout Experience

I would love to one day try this treatment. It seems it also works on women with "coarser" more afro like hair, like mine. I heard my grandmother talking about it yesterday mentioning it to my aunt so I figured it was time to post what I know about it for other people who may be interested. I am mostly curious just to see what it does and so I can say I've tried it and give other people an idea of what it can do. I find with being natural and trying to show people that there are options when going natural, you need proof like photo
proof and even then its... well your hair is looser and blah blah blah.

Additional tips for the process:
-Use a sulfate-free shampoo on your hair at all times.
-You should wear a mask and close your eyes during the blowdry with the paddle brush after the product has been applied.
-Do not use hair clips!!
-Do not use hair bands or bobby pins during the 48 hours you hair must stay straight during!!
-Wait four days before going into a pool or ocean after the treatment.
-You cannot use sprays, gels or mousses for the first four days.
-For the first few days, do not exercise or sweat.

Fitness Tip #1: Protein Shakes and Echinacea

Hey Natural Ladies,

I recently bought some wheybolic protein shake from GNC. I won't say the specific type just because every protein is made different and depending on your body and your diet, will determine which you should take. Consult with the GNC reps and a personal trainer on whats best for you. I have been working out 5-6 times per week with 40-50 minutes of cardio every work out.

Protein shakes are recommended after workouts because it helps reduce your recovery time and helps with muscle repair. Your body can absorb just about anything right after a workout, so this includes vitamins. Protein shakes are important just so that your workout actually has an affect and the desired affect.

It is recommended that you mix your shake with milk, over water. Following a tip I found on MoptopMaven's website, she recommended the Horizon Nonfat Milk. She uses it in place of protein shakes. I intend to use some of the milk and mix it with the shake but take a half dose of my shake so the powder lasts longer. Be sure to only drink the shake AFTER a workout, directly after!

Now on to Echinacea. This herb helps your immune system fight off sickness but it also helps with inflammation during your work out if you have asthma and mucus production during workouts. So this is a little trick I use to help, since I can't find my asthma pump to save my life.

Additionally, Omega 3's help with joint protection for those of you former track jumpers and hurdlers, I know your knees took a hit from those days. Make sure to check the mg of the EPA/DHA on the back, mine has 950mg in the triple strength version. It is important to also get the purified fish oils because the lower quality cheaper ones have some toxins and pollutants in it from the fish. RESEARCH ladies, its important.

That is all my loves!!!

Hey Ladies!

So I'm writing to talk about Miss Jessie's and their products' ingredient lists.

Though they have said on their Facebook fan page that there has been no change in the ingredients for the Target version of MJ's products, there has. Additionally, other vendors are receiving some of both versions. Read the ingredients, if Mineral Oil is like the 2-4th ingredient or even present period, it is the new watered down version. I spoke with an African Shop owner in Greensboro, NC, who also carries the product line along with various other natural products such as shea butter and she said that all the product lines that are present in mass market stores end up having to water down their line in order to stay ahead.

Even Jane Carter (JC) and Curls had to do the same thing, however, JC and Curls are honest about it. The Curls products in Target are marketed as Curls For Target, specifically. In order to get the original Curls Products you must read the design on the front of the bottle. It is in plain sight as long as you know to read for it and what it means.

Another piece of information I learned from here was that MJ and JC will only be in Target if they meet a certain sales quota in the first quarter of their release or so. So I guess if you want it to stay there you must buy it, however it will continue to be the same watered down version. I have pictures of the ingredient list from Curly Meringue which I will post so you can see the difference first hand.

Just be aware of these facts as you all go out to find the products you wish to try!

love, love,

♥ ♥ April Favorites ♥ ♥

Hey Ladies!

Here are my April Favorites!!

1. Burt's Bees Lemon Cuticle Butter

This cuticle butter is the best! I've been using it for my last few personal manicures. It is great it absorbs so quickly and its small and easy to carry around. I will be doing a review on it in a few days. I apply it twice a day when I can remember, day and night. It's an HG (holy grail) product for me.

2. Blended Cuties Down & Out Styles

This hair styling cream is the exact same formula as the Blendedy Beauty Happy Nappy Styles, I purchased this one because it was on sale on NaturallyCurly.com's website, while Happy Nappy Styles was not. The cream looks like the color and consistency of Duncan Hines Yellow Cake batter. It smells good to me, it isn't an overwhelming scent at all and I don't believe you'll smell it on your hair later. I used it to do a half coil. This means I didn't do full on coils, I used smaller sections of hair. People seemed to love this half coil I did. This cream may end up being a staple. I will try it a few more times and if it is versatile enough.

3. Kinky Curly Curling Custard

So this curling custard gave me the most defined curls I've ever had, even when my hair is wet it isn't this defined and curled. This custard is the bomb and I plan on trying Kinky Curly Knot Today under it to get a softer hold and curl. I love this stuff!!

4. Paul Mitchell: The Conditioner

This conditioner is the greatest. I love the slip it provides on my hair. I use it in my twists along with Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding and Frederic Fekkai Glossing Cream. It has a great feel on my hair and along with those other products, it provides amazing shine and moisture to my hair.

5. Nail Tek Foundation II

This foundation does wonders in filling ridges and in making a smoother surface for nail polish to be applied over. It would seem many people agree, I've seen loads of Youtube Vids with this as a favorite or being used.

6. Seche Vite Top Coat

This is the best, fastest drying top coat. One thing to be careful of is the fact that the top will dry quickly, but that doesn't mean the undercoats are dry. You can still do minor things, but try not to bump it around too much. After roughly 10-15 minutes it will be 'safe for wear.'

7. Alba Botanica: Coconut Cream/ Alba Botanica: Passion Fruit

This lip balm is amazing. It is all organic and it works wonders on moisturizing your lips. I have both formulas, they both smell great. Its not too waxy or too oily. I've been using it for months! I love it.

8. Bio Oil

This oil is great it has actually visibly lightened this horrible scar I have on my forehead from curling my bangs back during last summer when I still used my heat styling tools. I didn't even use it for too many days, I forgot after a few but I've noticed to lightening.

9. New York Sport Club Membership :)

Yeah... a little off from my other favorites, but it is one of my favorites! I love this gym its the bomb! I just got my membership a few days ago actually, but I love it already.

10. My New Phone Cover!! :)

Can I just say... CUTTTTEEEE!!!!! Its so colorful and pretty and girly. I love it its super, uber cute! Just look at it! :)
